What is Practice Monkeys: Guitar?
Short, Daily Lessons |
Practice Monkeys Guitar derives its lessons and direction from the Suzuki Method. We practice four days a week [Mon-Thurs] for 15 minutes a day with the expectation that the student(s) will continue practicing for 5-15 minutes after class depending on the Level. Upon completing our 12 level course you will be ready to study music in college and will be playing early-advanced level music.

Classes for (almost) all ages |
Our guitar program currently offers 1 beginning class for ages 8-up. Students as young as 6 are welcome to join at the discretion, and with the aid, of the parent. A Level 1/2 class will be considered based on interest. If your child has already started Suzuki lessons outside of our program, then we will place him or her in the class that best fits the study they have already accomplished. As is consistent with the Suzuki philosophy of education, the "Home Teacher" (what Dr. Suzuki called the parent in charge of practice at home), is there to help the student practice under the direction of the teacher leading the live practice session. We find this a very effective way to teach all kiddos, especially the littlest ones.
|
Advanced Technique |
Dr. Suzuki believed that all children are capable of doing advanced technique from the very first lesson. Once you begin to understand the complexity of alternating fingers that is introduced in the Twinkle variations, you begin to see the genius of the Suzuki Guitar Method. Dr. Suzuki understood that the voice of the instrument is the key to beautiful music, and so he started at the most obvious point where music happens, the alternating fingers of the right hand.
|
Accelerated Repertoire |
The repertoire in the Suzuki Method is accelerated, which is to say that students reach greater capacity in technique in a shorter amount of pieces than traditional method books. This is extremely desirable for a student's education because students who are capable of accelerating their education in their natural abilities are not held back by hundreds of songs. Suzuki music education is truly a beautiful thing to see work out in all student's lives, no matter the amount of natural ability with which they were born. Suzuki believed that all people are capable of making beautiful music. This is absolutely true.
|
Ear-training |
As is consistent with Dr. Suzuki's guitar teaching method, we guide the students in Practice Monkeys to develop a strong ear for the guitar in the early Levels of our program. This is hard work! As our students persevere, they gain an ear connection to their instrument that is not only necessary for accurate intonation, but also provides them with ease of playing and ability to improvise at an early stage. This is the genius of ear-training in the Suzuki Method.

Classical Guitar meets Fun |
Here at Practice Monkeys, we believe in truly excellent education. Classical guitar education will not hold a student back, but rather opens the door for other genres of music for the guitar by developing all aspects of technique for the guitarist. In Practice Monkeys, we enjoy all types of guitar music, but teach classical guitar in classes to accomplish this aim. We focus on resonant melodies, playing by ear, reading notation, learning theory and chord progressions, accompanying, and improvisation. We even have Rock Guitar courses for those students who want to learn techniques specific to the popular genre.

Why Practice Monkeys: Guitar?
In today's hectic day-to-day life it is often hard to find time to pack up the kids and go out for extra-circular activities especially if you have a larger family as Sarah and I do. We started Practice Monkeys with this in mind. As a result, we offered a family rate and live curricula that you can access from home. As of the writing of this page guitar classes can cost up to $120 per student per month. Here at Practice Monkeys we charge a fraction of that. What is more, each monthly enrollment counts for the whole family and not merely for a single student.
